This week I was so excited to present my micro-teaching lesson, for another class, but focused on trigonometry! I was able to use so many things that I have learned in this class, and apply it to creating a mini lesson! I have attached my slides below for you all to see!

While I was creating this lesson/presentation I kept thinking about this class and some of the components I could incorporate to make math more meaningful and engaging. So, I used the following ideas from this course!

1) Gallery walks- this allows students to get up and moving, while seeing what their peers have been working on. This can also help students think about different ideas and expand on what they were thinking!

2) Math journaling- I love this idea, and used it as my consolidation activity. This allows students to reflect on what they learned, the strategies they used, etc. I went even further with my lesson, and showed my peers all the ways that students can journal. They can use blogs, websites, google docs, hand written, PowerPoint, audio, video, etc.

Over the past few weeks I have been exploring and exploring ways for my students to create math journals that are exciting for them. While I was completing activities for my tech class last week, I created a virtual classroom for my math class! Below is a slide from my virtual classroom, that allows students to choose their journal format, and by clicking on the icons, it brings them to the website for them to start creating their journal! HOW FUN!

Here is my virtual classroom (it’s still new, so doesn’t have much yet):

Over the past few weeks in class, we have been going through “Learning Activities”. This is where everyone in the class receives a different course expectation pertaining to different grade level and stream. It has been so interesting seeing what my peers have come up with, especially since I haven’t done these courses in such a long time!

In going through all the activities, I have been able to recognize so many tools and strategies to use that can be adapted for an in-person or virtual setting. One tool that I, and so many of my peers have used is Google Jam Board! This tool is so great- it allows students to collaborate on one board, while also seeing the boards of their peers. One of my classmates today used this very well!

For this learning activity, Sydney B. (yes there is another Sydney in my class) created different “boards” for different groups to work on. What was nice about this is, we were able to work in small groups, but then we could flip through the different boards to see what others were doing. This was helpful for me, because when I got stuck, I could look to see what the other groups were doing for reference!

Overall, it is so cool to see how these tools can be adapted for different lessons and topics!

Until next time,

Sydney

  1. This is amazing Sydney! I loved how you used what you have learned in this course and also EDBE 8P71. This allows you to apply what you have been learning in different areas and having more practices will allow you to become a better teacher. Having these chances to teach and design mini learning activities allows us to reflect on what we did well and how we can improve to make the learning experience more impactful. Having the chance to teach online is so important since we aren't used to this style of teaching. With this pandemic, it has developed a new way to teach our students that might be the new way of teaching.
I love the jam board idea! The thing I love about jam boards is it doesn't put students on the spot. It is perfect for students who are scared to speak out loud to participate and be an active learners. This is very important if you want your students to have a positive learning experience. Also, I have been using Gallery walks a lot too! It's a fun way the students can learn new ways of solving problems and learn from their peers. Especially, during online learning, there isn't a lot of interaction. Therefore, involving a Gallery walk into your lesson provides that interaction for students. This will then make the lesson more engaging. Nice blog!
