Blog Post #7-January 25th, 2021
This week we started our “Leading Learning Activities”! I really enjoyed listening and engaging with these! It’s always great to hear new activity ideas and different tools that we can use in the classroom!
One of my classmates introduced the tool GeoGebra (https://www.geogebra.org/calculator). I have never heard of this before, but the activity was really great to introduce to our group of teacher candidates, as we enter the classroom. I really liked using this tool as it does so much, and it gives students a tool to help them see equations visually and checking their work. I think I can definitely see myself using this tool in my math classroom and with my students.
Overall, I think these learning activities have been awesome! I, being a teacher candidate have been so worried about planning fun and engaging activates. This exercise has been an awesome way to get some different ideas, that cover different aspects of the math curriculum. My peers have presented some amazing activities that I will draw upon in my own class!
Another thing that we did throughout today’s course was go through our ministry resources. This has been a great weekly activity in our class, as it gives us the chance to explore the resources that are available to us. The ones that I reflected on this week, I think are very valuable resources to know! I found this resource (https://www.oame.on.ca/main/files/Gr10TIPS-2008/Unit4/04%20-%20How%20to%20Check%20a%20Linear%20System.mov) to be very useful! This resource is a video that shows students how to use and input data in a graphing calculator. The great thing is that there are other guiding videos like it, that cover other topics. My other resource was TVOLearn (https://tvolearn.com/products/mpm2d-principles-of-mathematics-online-course?goto=3-14). This resource has a list of grade 10 lessons with videos, written examples and different apps that can enhance comprehension. I think this is a great tool to introduce to students especially if they need clarification on a topic, or missed a class, etc. Overall, I have loved hearing the resources that my peers are finding, and sharing the resources that I have found as well!
One thing that I have been reflecting on and this weeks class has made me think about, is how connecting math across the curriculum can be so easy. Today, one of the math activities was related to sports, and how math can help determine different plays and when footballs may intersect, etc. I think that it is so so important that we do our very best to connect math to the interests of our students, in any way that we can! I wanted to look more into this, so I found a great website (https://www.edutopia.org/article/7-real-world-math-strategies)! This website highlights some ideas on how we can incorporate authentic learning in math. One that stuck out for me, was the recipe problem. Students use fractions or equations and the answer the number of cups, tablespoons, etc. that the recipe needs. I like this activity because it can be tailored to different grade and academic levels!
I hope this blog post has provided some new ideas and resources that you can try in your classroom and with your students!
Until next time,
Sydney
